Hi!

I am Kanishka Gooneratne, welcome to my site. I applied for deferred entry medicine (entry in 2023) and received two offers from London Medical Schools, in what has been an exceptionally competitive year for medical applications. Having achieved  2A*'s and an A in my A-Level examinations this August I secured a place at my first choice Medical School, Kings College London (GKT Medical School). In light of this, and the experience I have gained from going through the long and arduous process of applying to study medicine, I felt it best to use some of my free time to give back to the next generation of medics. I want to aid them in being the best applicants they can be and securing their places at their dream medical schools.

My Qualifications

I tutor in Biology and Chemistry at GCSE and A-Level, in addition I am also an Interview Mentor and Coach and as a UCAT tutor (information on pricing can be seen on the 'Tuition and Pricing" Page).

I feel as though I am an individual who is qualified to tutor students at all schooling levels. Below are my achievements:

GCSEs: I acheived 8 A*s and 2 A's. I achieved A*'s (8/9 grade) in the 2 core subjects I am looking to tutor in Biology and Chemistry.

A-Levels: As mentioned I secured 2A*s and an A. I secured A*'s in Chemistry and Religious Studies as well as an A in Biology.

Medical Interviews: 100% Interview success rate

UCAT: Score of 2810 (top 11%) with 800 in Abstract Reasoning. As well as a Band 1 in SJT (Highest band, only 14% achieved a band 1)

I have excellent communication skills which aid my teaching tremendously. I am patient and this coupled with my communication skills and experience enable me to effectively adapt my teaching style to ensure the student can understand even the most difficult of concepts. I too struggled to grasp certain concepts and have learnt to approach issues from multiple angles in order to understand the core principles of the matter. This enables me to understand exactly what a student is going through when struggling themselves and so tackle the situation appropriately. As a student I believe I am in a unique position to be able to provide support for aspiring medics. I have only just completed the process of applying and as such I am in a unique position to offer personal advice as a successful medical applicant.

In addition I have experience tutoring at a GCSE level. I believe my prior tutoring experience has enabled me to refine my teaching method and improve the way I engage with the student as I hope can be seen below.

My Teaching Style

My Teaching Method

Subject tuition:

All teaching will be conducted via Zoom or your preferred online video application (Skype/teams etc.) I seek to make my lessons interactive, engaging and productive. The methods I use to deliver the information will vary based on the student. Through my own experience at school, I am aware that every student is different and unique and as such no one teaching structure will suit every student. I will organise a free online meeting prior to any lesson in order to enable you to get to know me a little better as well to enable me to get to know you and your learning style.

For GCSE & A-Level tuition in lessons I will keep the student engaged by using searching and challenging questions to test the depth of the understanding of the student. I will utilise past paper questions to fully prepare you for any range of questions that could come up and analyse any mistakes that are made thoroughly. I will continue to assess you on these mistakes utilising other past paper questions as well as self written exam-style questions. We will cover exam technique in detail using utilising a 30,000 word document I compiled from covering 10,000 marks worth of questions myself and analysing each and every mark.

Following each lesson a homework set of questions will typically be sent out which will be marked at the beginning of the following lesson to assess the efficacy of the previous lesson and assure that no gaps are left uncovered.

UCAT Tuition:

For UCAT Tuition and Interview preparation my methods will vary. In UCAT tuition sessions I will cover the best techniques to use to score maximally in each section. We will go through trends in questioning, the clues presented within each question and in addition go through numerous practice questions.

Interview Preparation:

During interview preparation we will cover the 'must knows' for interviews. This will include me detailing my personal interview answer templates for different question styles. In addition I will cover an extensive range of interview questions with you and conduct detailed analysis of the answers in order to highlight any weaknesses. If and when weaknesses are found I will use my experience as well a wealth of personal resources to cover any gaps in knowledge and reattempt similar questions until an answer framework is perfected. I will act to make sure that the student is confident in answering questions in any possible questioning region, ranging from ethics, to personal statement questions, to medical concepts. In order to make sure each student feels prepared for the interview they have coming up I will also assemble a mock interview in order to mimic a specific university's interview style.
